Dr. Fletcher’s is a Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education at Wilfrid Laurier University, Waterloo, an interdisciplinary department which focuses on physical activity, health promotion and behaviour modification across the life span. Her research interests are diverse in nature and are linked by the common thread of risk, or more specifically, risk reduction. Her research program broadly deals with health and well-being. The overall goal of this research is to determine factors that lead to poor health across the age continuum. Identification of these risk factors is a crucial prerequisite for the elimination of risk factors, and ultimately, the restoration of well-being.

Area 1 of her research focuses on seniors at risk. Instrumental to this research is her affiliation with the Research Advisory Panel to the Canadian Collaborating Centre and the Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI) Series of Instruments. Specifically, Dr. Fletcher’s research addresses fall prevention, an issue that represents a high cost to seniors and society. Additionally, she examines issues surrounding health behaviours among the elderly (e.g., screening).

Her 2nd area of research explores the “lived experiences” of individuals following a chronic condition diagnosis, such as pediatric cancer, irritable bowel syndrome or inflammatory bowel disease. These experiences are examined from the views of the diagnosed individual, their family members and health care professionals.
